Genre Poem

Hi! My name is Megan. I was diagnosed with Central Auditory Processing Disorder a couple years ago. It is a disorder that causes my brain to work slower than other people my age. I have made a lot of progress since I was told what was wrong with me and who to go to for help. I am almost caught up with my class. There are many different things that a person with CAPD can do to help them deal with their disorder. My family and I decided that the best thing for me is to work with the speech teacher at school and to work with a computer program called Fast Forward. Both the teacher and the computer games have helped me to improve in my schoolwork. I am doing good now but my family and I went through a rough time before I was told what was wrong with me. I wrote a poem about what that time was like and what we went through. I am going to share it with you. I hope you like it. Here it is.

The Worst is Over.
By: Megan

You think that I'm stupid,
You think I can's see,
The way you point, look,
And laugh at me.

I deserve to be happy,
In the same way you do,
You shouldn't judge me,
Cause I'm not just like you.

It's been a long battle,
I've been through it all.
You should be nicer to me,
And not think so small.

I ignore what you say.
I ignore what you do.
Believe it or not,
I just as special as you.

I’m just a girl.
Only 12 years old.
I have a disorder,
That makes me think slow.

I have a speech teacher at school,
Who I see everyday.
She says I’m improving,
Making progress in every way.

It took a while
For people to know
Just what was wrong
That made me learn slow.

Some thought I was lazy,
That I didn’t like school.
Some thought I was mean,
How totally uncool.

I met all sorts of people,
Who kept giving me tests.
Once they said I had ADD
And pills would work best.

The pills didn’t help
And they made me feel icky.
So we met with new people
It hopes to get lucky.

We met a new doctor
Who sent me to an Audiologist.
I was glad to be off the pills,
But I needed more tests!

They gave me more tests.
And soon it was said,
“You don’t have ADD,
You have CAPD instead."

Everyone was helpful,
Explaining things to me and my mom.
Both disorder symptoms were similar,
Which is why everything went wrong.

Now, with a new disorder,
They had to tell us what to do.
"Therapy is necessary,
try, both, old methods and new."

Many people are helping me.
I’m getting better everyday.
The biggest problem of not knowing is over.
And my best is on it’s way.

*This is a fictitious character and poem. I worked really hard to try to sound like a 12-year-old child. I really hope that you all like it. Please leave a comment or email me if you have any suggestions for my poem.
