Preface

In CD-315, we were expected to complete a Multi-Genre Research Project. This project includes informative, research material, but it is presented in a fun and creative manner. I choose to research Central Auditory Processing Disorder because it is very intriguing to me. The first time that I heard about the disorder was from a lady that was discussing the disorder at a conference. Immediately, I was interested. Soon after, I started hearing more and more about the disorder. The more I learned about it, the more I was interested. I was especially interested in Central Auditory Processing Disorder because it is relatively new in the field of Communication Disorders and much of the disorder is still unknown. Another thing that really interests me about CAPD is that the symptoms of the disorder reflect other disorders. I wanted to learn more about the disorder which is why I chose it to be the focus of my Multi-Genre Research Project.

The Multi-Genre Project includes a collection of fictional pieces that displays different views of the disorder. We had lots of freedom with our MRP. We were required to complete a poem, a PowerPoint Presentation, a webliography, and three other genres of our choice. I chose to complete a lesson plan, letter to parent, and a newsletter. I chose to create a lesson plan from the perspective of an SLP because it is something that I will be doing a lot in the future and thought it would be good practice. I also thought that it would be a good way to get an accurate view of the clinician. I chose to write a letter to a parent from the SLP perspective as well. I think that it is very important for parent to be involved in their child’s therapy and for the clinician and the parent to develop a working relationship, which is why I included this piece. The last genre, and my favorite, that I chose to complete is a newsletter. I really think that people with disorders are often criticized and viewed to be different from the rest of the world. I wrote the newsletter from a parental perspective to give a sense of reality to the piece and I wrote it in a way for these parents and children to be viewed as normal people living with a disorder, rather than just people with disorders.

I really tried to give a sense of reality and purpose for each of the pieces that I included in my genre. I also tried to give a variety of different perspectives using the same characters. This is the first project of this type that I have ever done so it may be a little rough, but I worked very hard to make it the best that I could for my audience. I hope that you enjoy it!!

This assignment has been very different from everything that I’m used to, so I have required lots of assistance. Everyone in the CD-315 summer class has contributed to my completion in some way. Looking at genres, reading e-mails, and reading peer reviews from my classmates have given me the motivation and inspiration that I needed to create this project. My group members, Lekei, Mary, and Emily, were especially helpful to me. Every week, they provided me with friendship and comments as they critiqued my work. They kicked me in the rear when I needed it and patted me on the back when I deserved it. Mrs. McComas is another person that has had a major impact on my work. She has consistently worked to provide a fun and friendly learning enviroment. She has given support, listened to whining and rambling, and promptly answered every question. Without her, I would have never gotten started on this assignment because I did not understand the concept of Multi-Genre Research Project. She patiently stayed on the Internet and provided answers and comments for about 30-45 minutes of constant questions from me. Everyone in the CD-315 class has been very helpful and supportive during this trying, summer semester and I want you all to know that I truly appreciate and care for each of you.

About the Author

Hello! My name is Valerie Jude. I am 22 years old and from a small town called Inez, KY. I am a senior in the Communication Disorders program at Marshall University and I will graduate next May. Beyond graduation, my future is a little fuzzy. I hope to continue my education in the Communication Disorders program by attending Marshall’s Graduate School. Acceptance notices are 6-9 months away, which is I’m a little confused about what I’ll be doing this time next year.
